For years, I’ve been dreaming of becoming a Digital Nomad. If you aren’t familiar with the lingo, a Digital Nomad is someone who can work from anywhere. Sometimes, these peeps are also referred to as location-independent business owners.
When I first left my 15-year teaching career 4.5 years ago, I began researching what it would take to live and work abroad and run my business from foreign lands. I came upon a wonderful community of digital nomads in Bali, and I reached out to talk to them. This community is known as LIvit Spaces, and I made a pitch to visit and write a feature article for Huffington Post. They accepted–and that trip forever changed my life!
There was just one problem with my Digital Nomad plan: My husband was not down with the idea at all. He couldn’t see giving up his career as a software engineer at Etsy to travel around the world with me while I built my business. What most people don’t know is that I was crushed and deflated by his unwillingness to think out-of-the-country. But you know what? I am one patient gal when I have to be. 🙂
Fast-forward to the present: My husband is still working at Etsy, but we have dreamed bigger and tested out some new ideas, together. We have purchased a beautiful Mountain Chalet in the Poconos, and he’s been practicing working from that home more, as well as our Brooklyn apartment. And…wait for it…we will be living in Costa Rica for 5.5 months from November 2017 – April 2018! No more Northeast winters for meeeee!! Yipppeeee!
I am inviting you to watch the interview below, produced by my dear friend and Business Coach colleague, KeeKee, called the Digital Nomad’s Talk. We talk candidly about my journey into Digital Nomad Land, how I nurtured the dream and vision (despite my better half objecting, initially), and the many things I am trying to figure out before we take off for Costa Rica in the Fall.
