Joy is a business necessity.
It’s the vibrant, colorful lifeblood of our work. The untouchable thing that makes our brand feel electric and inspired. The it factor that sets us apart from all the saturated noise and attracts our perfect-fit clients to us like moths to a flame.
So many business owners today are operating their businesses without a single ounce of joy. They’re bogged down by the day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, struggling to keep their head above water. This is not only an unsustainable way to live and work, but it’s also a huge missed opportunity.
A lot of people are familiar with the phrase “zone of genius” as coined by Gary Hendricks in his book “The Big Leap.” I want to introduce a new state of mind to aspire to: your zone of joy.
Working on tasks that align with your strengths and skills will help you create a business that’s profitable. But working on tasks that light you up inside like nothing else will help you create a business that’s profitable and joyful.
When we’re operating in our zone of joy, our work is effortless and feels like play. We feel inspired to take action, results come easily and effortlessly, and we experience a deep sense of satisfaction in what we do.
In order to create a business that truly thrives (and is authentic to you), it’s essential to discover your zone of joy and then infuse that into everything you do.
So—how do you find it?
Step #1: Figure out what you love
The first step is to get clear about the things that bring you joy. What are the activities, interests, and passions that make your heart sing? When you’re engaged in these things, do you feel a sense of excitement and energy? Or do you feel deeply relaxed and at ease?
Take some time to reflect on this and write down all of the things that come to mind. Don’t be afraid to get creative here!
Once you have a good list, start narrowing it down by asking yourself these questions:
- What are the activities I love that also bring me money?
- What are the activities I love that I can do for hours without getting bored?
- What are the activities I love that challenge me and make me feel alive?
- What are the activities I love that I can do with other people?
- What are the activities I love that I can do on my own?
Step #2: Figure out your strengths
The next step is to figure out your strengths. What are the things that come naturally to you? What are you really good at? What do people compliment you on?
Again, don’t be afraid to get creative! The following questions might help:
- What are the skills I’ve developed over the years that I’m proud of?
- What are the things I’m really good at that other people find challenging?
- What are the activities I love that also challenge me?
Step #3: Find your sweet spot
Now that you have a good list of things that bring you joy, it’s time to start honing in on your sweet spot. This is the place where your talents and strengths intersect with what you love doing.
Think about the activities on your list and ask yourself:
- How can I make this more of what I do?
- How can I turn this into a business?
- What are some possible ways to monetize this?
Step #4: Take action!
The final step is to start taking action! This might mean starting a blog, creating a course, starting a business, or simply incorporating more of what you love doing into your current work.
The most important thing is to start moving in the direction of your zone of joy and let the rest take care of itself.
When you’re operating in this space, you’ll find that everything becomes easier. The money will come, the clients will flow in, and you’ll be doing what you love with ease and joy.
