There’s so much chatter about the state of social media right now with TikTok and Facebook up in the air. People are wondering where to go, what to do, and how to protect their business. I posed the question on LinkedIn and got a ton of great input:
Jennifer Vaaler says
“I’m personally moving to YouTube. They’ll be adding a lot more to the community tab this year and I’m excited about that. I’d recommend YT and Email.”
David Imber SCMP, GAICD shared what he’s been suggesting to his clients:
“I’ve been telling clients to leave Twitter/ X for ages (why waste time hanging out at a toxic, unproductive party?) and Facebook is being left behind all on its own (why show up to a party most of your friends are no longer at?) My clients tend not to use TikTok but I suspect it’ll stay in some capacity. I’m actually delighted to see a shake up in the social media landscape- it’s good to see people moving at scale to BlueSky and I hope we see platforms that form that respect users and don’t seek to constantly shake us down. I’m happily on here but I don’t pay for Premium (over priced) and I don’t like seeing suggested posts in place of posts of people I’ve actually chosen to connect with. LinkedIn is on a bit of notice for me frankly but it’ll be much harder to replace this community than it will twitter. Game on!”
Elissa Jane Mastel had a ton of great advice:
“Multichannel marketing is always key, have strategies for all major channels. People always threaten to leave FB but they don’t because they don’t want to miss pics of their grandkids, people are staying on Instagram because it’s having a comeback, TikTok isn’t going dark, there’s a bill on the floor called the Extend the TikTok Deadline Act backed by Senator Ed Markey, so now what else.
YouTube is where it’s at. Create a channel and build it. So many possibilities including shorts, longer form content, and great ads platform.
Instagram and other channels are going to follow suit of TikTok shop and create ways to buy online right from posts more effectively.
Email marketing, are they deploying it and using it fully. Have a steady stream of meaningful content that you’re sharing via email, emails still convert!
TEXT MARKETING! Depending on what clients you have text marketing is bursting at the seams, and there are many new ways to capture audiences with texts (obvs not awesome for B2B)
TikTok will never be the same, but it is NOT going away just like that.
There is always something new too…. there could be a new TikTok emerging, and a bunch of silly things people are trying.
The show must go on, keep adapting!”
Meridith Grundei shares,
“A wise woman once told me, “Do what brings you joy!” Also, do what is best for your mental health. I have great success on TikTok and where I will feel disappointed, if it is banned, I feel that change is inevitable and so I will pivot. New strategy, fresh start, new challenge!
FB hasn’t brought me joy since probably 2009, so that’s an easy one! 😂
Bluesky, YouTube and Substack are all great options—And, you have an opportunity to reach a new audience! Win, win! oh, and of course, move these new found fans over to your mailing list. SCORE!”
Nina Froriep had a great recommendation:
“Learn to Love LinkedIn!! It’s great for your nervous system and it talks directly to your target audience- with a bit of strategic planning!!!”
Annette Choti had this to say:
“It’s definitely a challenging time for business owners. I’d suggest they focus on building their own digital assets, like a WordPress website and an email list. Social media should enhance their strategy, not be the foundation. This approach ensures more control and stability, and then you aren’t building your business on someone else’s virtual real estate!”
That’s just the tip of the iceberg — there’s so much more great advice! If you’ve got some to share, please, join the conversation on LinkedIn.
